Check Parts Availability

The Plymouth Prowler has officially entered its era of appreciation. Hagerty named it a Bull Market car, auction prices have surged to $290,000 for rare examples, and a new generation of collectors is moving in fast. This guide gives you everything we share with buyers who call us at TheProwlerStore.com — from which year to target to the nine inspection points that dealers miss.

What Makes the Prowler Special

The Plymouth Prowler was a production-built hot rod manufactured from 1997 to 2002. Aluminum-bodied, inspired by 1930s open-wheel racers, and unlike any other American car of its era. When Plymouth was discontinued in 2001, production continued under Chrysler badging through mid-2002.

"Only 11,702 Prowlers were ever built — across all years, all colors, all editions. No more will ever be made. Every car that survives in good condition is becoming more valuable, not less."

Our recommendation: Aim for a 2000–2002 model. Latest improvements, more color options, chrome wheels standard. For all practical purposes of ownership and parts availability, they are identical to each other.

Know Your Colors: Rarity & Resale

Color choice on a Prowler is more than aesthetics — it determines rarity, resale price, and desirability. Here's what you need to know:

ColorYears AvailableUnits MadeResale Value
Prowler Purple 1997–2002Most producedStrong — signature color
Yellow 1999–2002HighVery strong — most popular
Black 1999–2002HighStrong — always in demand
Mulholland Blue 2001 onlyLimitedHigh — matching blue top
Woodward Edition (Orange/Black) 2000 only153 unitsVery high — extremely rare
Candy Red Metallic 2002 only300 unitsHighest — $38K–$44K+
Inca Gold 1999–2000LowWeakest — least popular

Most important factor for resale: mileage. Aim for under 3,000 miles — there are enough available that you don't have to compromise. Candy Red 2002 with low miles regularly commands $44,000 or more.

9 Things to Inspect Before You Buy

This is where most first-time buyers get burned. A standard pre-purchase inspection will miss Prowler-specific failure points. Use this section as your walk-around checklist.

01

Front Lower Ball Joints ⚠ Safety Critical

The most serious mechanical issue on every Prowler. The front lower control arm ball joints are known to fail catastrophically — there are documented NHTSA reports of the front tire completely separating from the car at low speed. One owner described a loud pop in a parking lot; the tire had dropped to the ground.

What to check: Park on a level surface. Jack the A-arm slightly off the ground and test for any play in the joint. Look for torn boots as an early warning sign. Chrysler recall kit (part# cbbtc030) is depleted industry-wide. If not yet replaced, factor in this repair immediately.

02

Window Regulators High Priority

Every Prowler eventually experiences window regulator failure — it is a documented NHTSA design flaw. The cable envelope cracks and pulls apart, trapping the window mid-travel. This is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when.

What to check: Roll both windows fully up and down, slowly. Listen for grinding, feel for any resistance, watch for hesitation. Sluggish movement means the regulator is already failing.
🪟
Window Regulator Kits

One of our most-requested parts. Fix it before it fails completely — don't get caught with a window stuck open.

03

PCM & TCM — Powertrain Control Modules High Priority

The most common PCM failure is code P0601 — Internal Check-Sum Error. The memory chip inside degrades with age. When this fires, the Check Engine light comes on and the car fails most state inspections. Chrysler no longer manufactures Prowler PCMs. TheProwlerStore.com acquired the last stock of new units for all years — and can also repair your existing module.

What to check: Ask for any stored fault codes. If the Check Engine light is on or has been recently cleared, treat this as a red flag requiring investigation before purchase.

04

Convertible Top & Seals High Priority

Individual top seals and trim pieces are largely discontinued. Chrysler now requires purchasing entire top assemblies — if those are still available. Defects here are expensive, time-consuming repairs.

What to check: Inspect the top fabric for pinholes or thin spots. Check window-edge seals for dryness and cracking. Operate the electric top through a full open/close cycle — any hesitation signals motor or seal issues.
🛡️
Car Covers & Trailer Covers

Protect your convertible top investment with a custom-fit cover — available in colors. Far better quality than the original discontinued Chrysler cover.

05

Headlight Condensation Monitor

As Prowlers age, condensation builds inside the headlight assemblies. It doesn't immediately affect performance but headlight assemblies run over $700 each — and once a seal is gone, it only worsens.

What to check: Look into the headlight lens at an angle in direct light. Any fogging, water staining, or condensation inside signals seal deterioration.

06

Fuel System — Pump & Gauge High Priority

Prowler fuel pumps are discontinued at Chrysler. The fuel gauge is also known to run inaccurately on older units. TheProwlerStore.com carries both new and rebuilt fuel pumps — one of the only sources left.

What to check: Does the fuel gauge read accurately right after a fill-up? Ask about any fuel delivery issues — hard starts, stalling, or hesitation under load. These are early signs of pump failure.
Prowler Fuel Pumps — New & Rebuilt

Chrysler no longer stocks these. We do. Available new or rebuilt for all Prowler years.

07

Tires — No Spare, No Run-Flats Know Before You Buy

The Prowler came from the factory with run-flat tires and no spare tire or jack. The original run-flat specification is discontinued. Modern owners rely on AAA or roadside assistance. The rear tires are wide 295-section units — factor in replacement cost if they're worn.

What to check: Check sidewall condition and DOT date code (last 4 digits = week/year manufactured). Tires over 6 years old should be replaced regardless of tread depth. Deduct cost from your offer.
08

Front Bumpers High Priority

Front bumpers are exposed, fragile, and now extremely expensive. A bumper that was $650 years ago now costs over $1,299 — and that price only goes up as supply dwindles. Some owners remove them for styling. This is a mistake: the exposed nose is vulnerable to parking lot damage, and replacements are increasingly hard to source.

What to check: Inspect both bumpers for cracks, stress marks, and paint adhesion. If removed, budget for very high replacement cost and check the front clip carefully for hidden damage.
🛡️
Front End Protection & Bras

Protect what you paid for. Front end bras and scratch guards prevent the damage that costs a fortune to fix.

09

Chrome Wheel Center Caps Quick Check

A persistent, annoying issue: the factory chrome wheel center caps fall off and are expensive to replace. All four missing caps is a telling sign of how carefully (or not) the car has been kept.

What to check: Confirm all four wheel caps are present and undamaged. If any are missing, deduct replacement cost from your offer.

Upgraded Wheel Center Caps

Our modified version uses a heavy-duty aluminum ring with rubber O-ring. They stay on — permanently solving this problem.

Source parts now while stock exists

The parts reality: Chrysler no longer produces approximately 99% of Prowler-specific parts. Radiators, fuel pumps, front wheels, PCMs, TCMs, headlight assemblies, bumper components — all discontinued. Prices on remaining stock rise every year.

Plymouth vs. Chrysler: Does It Matter?

Mechanically — not really. Plymouth produced the car from 1997 until mid-2001, then Chrysler badged it through mid-2002 on the same line with the same parts. There is no meaningful difference for ownership, maintenance, or parts.

Quick way to tell: Check the rear bumper. "Plymouth" embossed = Plymouth car. Blank rear bumper = Chrysler. The hood emblem confirms it. For both — the parts are identical, the love is the same.
